Stories We Live By: How Patterns and Perspective Shape Our Lives
Jan 31, 2026
We all carry stories—about ourselves, others, and the world. This post explores how these stories quietly shape our reality, and how recognizing them is the first step to meaningful change.
The Power of Stories
Every day, we interpret life through stories—narratives about who we are, what’s possible, and how the world works. These stories are often invisible, yet they influence every decision, reaction, and relationship. They’re not just background noise; they’re the script we follow, often without even realising it.
Three Real-Life Patterns (Health, People-Pleasing, Money)
Let’s look at three anonymised stories drawn from coaching work:
-
Health: “I am a problem to be fixed.” A person cycles through diets and routines, believing every slip is proof of failure, not recognising the deeper story about self-worth.
-
People-Pleasing: “I must keep everyone else comfortable.” Someone rushes through meetings, says yes to everything, and feels responsible for others’ moods—driven by a story about value and acceptance.
-
Money/Safety: “I am never truly safe.” Even with financial stability, anxiety persists because the underlying story is that disaster is always just around the corner.
Though the details differ, these stories shape what people notice, what they fear, and what they believe is possible for them.
How Stories Become Lenses
Over time, repeated experiences and the meanings we attach to them become the lens through which we see. The story becomes reality: “This is just how I am.” But stories are learned, not fixed. When we see them as stories—not facts—we can begin to question and change them.
The Trap of Surface Solutions
Many try to change their lives by addressing habits or circumstances. But if you don’t address the underlying story, old patterns return. Real transformation happens when you recognise and rewrite the story driving your choices.
Reflection: What Story Are You Living?
-
What’s the recurring narrative behind your biggest challenge?
-
Where did it come from—family, culture, past experiences?
-
What might shift if you saw it as a story, not a fact?
Awareness is the first step to changing the script.
